What to Wear to Your First Aerial Silks Class

A quick, parent-friendly guide for first-time flyers at Flexibility in Flight in Chester, NY.

Fabrics: fitted, breathable, no zippers

Choose smooth, four-way stretch fabrics — a cotton/spandex or nylon blend works well. Avoid clothes with zippers, buttons, hooks, buckles, or rhinestones. Anything hard or sharp can snag the silks or dig into skin during wraps.

Fit: leggings, never shorts

  • Full-length leggings that cover the backs of the knees.
  • A fitted long-sleeve top or rashguard that covers armpits and elbows.
  • A top long enough to stay tucked in when you go upside down.
  • Bare feet — no shoes or socks in the air.

Shorts, sports bras and crop tops aren't allowed in aerial classes. The silks grip the backs of the knees and arms during wraps and drops, and bare skin there can burn and bruise.

Safety: jewelry, hair, nails

  • Remove rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches.
  • Skip dangling earrings — studs are fine.
  • Tie long hair back in a low bun or braid.
  • Keep nails short so they don't catch on the fabric.
